President William McKinely...enlisted in the Civil War as a private...by the time the war was over he had attained the rank of brevet Major.  McKinely served as President of the U.S. from 1896 until 1901, when he was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in New York.   This image is an artist conception of the uniform the Commander in Chief would have worn.
