The Elk- cigar box label

Back

Originally a social club started by a small group of actors and entertainers in N.Y.C.

As one of the city's 'Blue Laws' prohibited public business/bars to be open on Sundays, the group started a social club called "The Jolly Corks" to circumvent the law.  After the death of one of its members, leaving his family destitute, the group decided they needed to become more than just a social entity.

In 1868, with a new purpose and newly developed rituals, the "Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was established.
