Francis Bret Harte was an American author, humorist and journalist who wrote short stories, humorous verse and novels with picturesque local Western color. He is most famous for his Western short stories, such as "The Luck of Roaring Camp". During the 1860's Harte became the first editor of The Overland Monthly and the unofficial leader of a large and diverse literary movement in San Francisco, which included Mark Twain. Harte also served as the U.S. consul in Germany and Scotland from 1878 to 1885 and spent the remainder of his life in Europe. |
