| After the Civil War, Fitzhugh was elected Governor of Virginia (1885-1889) and then appointed Consul General of Havana (1896-1898). When the war broke out with Spain, Lee returned to military life as Major General of Volunteers and commanded the VII Corps in Cuba. Lee was appointed military governor of Havana in 1899. |
