Joseph Hooker (1814-1879)...graduated West Point in 1837, fought in the Mexican war and Civil war. In 1861 was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers; in 1862 promoted to Major General of Volunteers; fell out of favor with Lincoln with his disastrous defeat by R.E. Lee at Chancellorsville; fought with distinction at Lookout Mountain and was brevetted Major General.
Side Note: General Hooker allowed women to follow his troops during their campaigns...the term 'Hooker' was coined for the prostitutes that followed his troops. |
