| William Tecumseh "Cump" Sherman (1820-1891)...Graduated West Point 1840; 1853 resigned from the military with a rank of Colonel to take up banking in California; 1861 entered the war as a Colonel; after 1st Battle of Bullrun promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers; 1864 promoted to Major General in Regular Army; Sherman's military career was a virtual seesaw but Sherman is the best known Union General next to US Grant because of his "March to the Sea" campaign. On March 4, 1869 Grant became President and Sherman was made General of the Army. |
