Arthur S. Sullivan (1842-1900)

Arthur Seymour Sullivan was an English composer who, together with W. S. Gilbert, created the distinctive form of the operetta.  Gilbert's ingenious satire and Sullivan's melodiousness were perfectly matched.  Gilbert and Sullivan first collaborated in 1871 and together wrote astonishingly successful works such as "H. M. S. Pinafore" (1878) and "The Pirates of Penzance" (1879).
